On to Staten Island....

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

Random Thoughts

So today is the first day off this season, and it was much needed. Playing a game everyday takes a toll on you, even if you only play in every 3rd game or so. I'm sure exactly what I want to do today, but i really want to see a movie, i suppose it doesn't matter which movie cause there are a lot of good movies out right now. That being said, i could just sit inside all day and relax and watch some bleach, fmab, deathnote, and listen to the new Incubus album (which is amazing so far). Either way today should be a nice relaxing day and i intend to take advantage of it. Tomorrow morning we go out to Staten Island to play the yankees Short season team. I'm pretty stoked cause i haven't ever been there and on thursday our game is at 11am so after the game we have plenty of time to explore. Lately i haven't been able to listen to anything other than Of Mice And Men and Woe, Is Me, which definitely doesn't bother me, but now that i have Incubus' new album i doubt i'll be listening to anything other than that for a while. Anyway that's about it.

Poytress & Robinson

www.fresnobee.com
Fresno State's baseball rebuilding project grew this week after Dusty Robinson and Josh Poytress decided as expected to pass on their senior seasons and instead sign professional contracts.

Josh and Dusty started their journey as Freshman Bulldog roommates. Its been a great friendship and a tie that even the parents share. They both even had a crazy freshman summer ball trip, lol. Dusty has fought through opposition and so has his buddy Josh. Today is no different as Josh waits for Dusty's arrival of his friend @ NY Penn League. Good luck to two fine young men!

Brennan, Charlie let no grass grow....so happy for our boys!

Senior Danny Muno was the first Bulldog to get selected in the 2011 MLB draft.

June 7, 2011

FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Danny Muno was the first Bulldog selected in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft in the eighth round and teammate Dusty Robinson followed in the 10th round. Also, selected on the second day of the draft were Greg Gonzalez, Josh Poytress, Jordan Ribera, Garrett Weber, Brennan Gowens, Taylor Garrison , Charlie Robertson and Trent Garrison.
In all, 10 Bulldogs were drafted in first-year player's draft, which is the most in one year under head coach Mike Batesole. It also breaks the Fresno State record for the amount of Bulldogs taken in the same draft. The previous high was nine Bulldogs in 1984. A total of 44 Bulldogs have been drafted under Batesole's watch including, three first round picks.
"This is an exciting day for Fresno State baseball with 10 Bulldogs being taken in the 2011 MLB Draft," said Batesole. "We are especially happy for our seniors, who have given so much to our program, to get an opportunity to continue playing."

Muno was selected as the 252 overall pick in the eighth round by the New York Mets. The third baseman leaves Fresno State among the top 10 in most career statistical categories. Muno hit .346 during his senior campaign with 14 doubles and three home runs with 52 RBIs. Muno was named All-WAC every year in his career as a Bulldog.

Robinson, who was named the 2011 WAC Player of the Year, was taken in the 10th round (316 overall pick) by the Oakland A's. The junior led the conference in home runs with 16 and doubles with 20. Robinson hit .310 with 39 extra base hits. He earned his second All-American accolade along with first-team All-WAC honors in 2011.The WAC Pitcher of the Year was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 15th round as the 473 overall pick. Gonzalez had the best ERA in the league at 1.79 giving up 21 earned runs in 105.1 innings pitched. He also led the WAC in strikeouts with 124. Gonzalez was named a first-team All-American and semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award.
The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Poytress in the 18th round and was the 542nd overall pick of the draft. The left-hander recorded a 2.85 ERA in 2011 and struck out 56 batters. He earned All-WAC honors the past two seasons. Poytress allowed 12 walks and 25 earned runs in 79 innings pitched.
Ribera was selected in the 21st round (648 overall pick) by the Colorado Rockies. The first baseman earned All-American honors during his junior season when he led the country in home runs. Ribera hit .240 this season with 16 doubles, a triple and eight homers. The senior was named All-WAC the last two seasons.
Weber was the first Bulldog taken in the 222nd round (664 overall pick) by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Weber is the third senior to get drafted in 2011. He hit .274 with six doubles, two triples and five home runs. The shortstop also recorded 33 RBIs and started all 56 games this season. Weber earned All-WAC honors both seasons in a Bulldog uniform.
A few picks later, Gowens was selected by the Los Angeles Angels as the 675 overall pick in the 22nd round. The outfielder was an All-WAC selection during his junior season after hitting .261 with 12 doubles and five home runs. Gowens recorded 10 stolen bases and 37 RBIs. He was also a WAC All-Tournament selection.
The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Garrison in the 27th round (824 overall). The junior finished the season with the best ERA on the team at 1.32. He had a 2-2 record and three saves in 18 appearances. Garrison limited opponents to eight earned runs and 25 hits in 34 innings pitched.
Robertson was drafted by the Atlanta Braves as the 836 overall pick in the 27th round. Robertson led the team in saves with 12 in 24 appearances. He recorded a 3.51 ERA allowing 13 earned runs and 30 hits in 33.1 innings of work.
Junior Trent Garrison was selected in the 50th round (1515 overall) by the Los Angeles Angels. He sat out the 2011 season after suffering a season-ending injury in the first game of the season.

How great is this picture??  Jordan's 1st at bat as a Dust Devil was a broken bat RBI!  Woo Hoo!  He just finished his 1st home series and has hit the ground running!  I love how I have audio for all the games!  Makes me feel like I'm there........well, almost!  He's in the same league as Garrett Weber and Greg Gonzalez and will get to play against his Cape Cod roommate Joe Panik who was picked in the 1st round by the San Francisco Giants.  What a GREAT summer this will be!

Josh Poytress leaves for NY Penn League

Hi my fellow Bulldog parents. I hope you are as excited about our blog as i am! This morning at 6:30 am Josh boarded his flight to begin his journey to becoming a Pittsburgh Pirate! We spent most of our day yesterday packing up his house and packing his travel bag. The brothers, Jordan, Jeremiah & Nicholas, along with Kelly & I, had dinner together at Casa Corona. Kelly kept us rolling with all his jokes, and the boys humored him by laughing anyways, lol. Later that night, Josh's beautiful sister Toridawn surprised him with her arrival after midnight. Everyone together....blessings for sure! As I am writing, Josh has let us know he has arrived at Phoenix for his connection. While grabbing something to eat, Josh ran into former teammate Jake Floethe, who is also heading to the NY Penn League. How cool is that?! Go Jake!
Josh is now boarding for the long leg of his trip...sleep well son...and have fun at the Pirates game tonight. Love, Mom

Kelly, Joshua & Me at airport send off

So, what's going on here?

Hi everyone! Welcome to From Bulldogs to Bigs, a blog that will chronicle the experiences, stats and personal player updates of the Fresno State Baseball players who were picked up in the 2011 MLB draft. Parents and players will be contributing to this blog so that anyone who wants to know what's going on with our hometown heroes can log on and get the latest information! Some of the first posts will likely be short bios from each of the players that are a part of this group so that readers can get better acquainted with them.

There is also a Facebook page associated with this group so that those who don't want to subscribe to this blog's feed can still get information in their Facebook News Feed. You can "friend" the Fresno State Draftees here.

Stay tuned for more!
